Clarks (Wantage) Ltd have been a customer of Mercian Labels for over a decade, buying a large and increasing range of designs of shelf edge labels for their premium flour products from us manufactured using conventional flexo’. Their business involves milling speciality flours for craft home bakers.
However, as their market has evolved, they wanted to experiment with more varieties of flour, with lots more SKU colour varieties and in different short run quantities whilst cutting down costs. By late 2012 their profile of work was ripe for moving to digital. Significant technical challenges around colour matching digital print to existing flexo printed labels were overcome.
The benefits of moving from flexo to digital for the customer were significant and demonstrated in their testimonial (below). They have been able to grow their business by expanding their product range significantly, cutting out all plate costs, increasing the number of innovative colours used in their designs to increase shelf edge appeal, seen a significant increase in quality and also a reduction in lead times.
All of this has been done using standard label stock, and using clean but clever designs and the full range of benefits including the excellent 1200dpi print quality of digital to provide maximum value to the customer.
Our client commented “Having moved over to digital labels after 10+ years of flexo labels, not only did Mercian Labels make the move smooth and easy to happen, the quality and finish of the labels has certainly increased. We stick these labels on bags of flour to go out of shop shelves and since moving over the colour has got brighter and the printing a lot clearer too. We use thousands of label on a daily basis. The main benefit of the digital labels is that anything that needs to be changed can be done almost instantly rather than waiting for a new printing block to be made, This is extremely handy for us, also it cuts down the costs. We try to place orders of 20,000 labels plus and where the flexo labels needed a 3 week lead time the digital one seem to be ready almost instantly.”
We will be attending the awards ceremony on 3 October with our fingers crossed for an award!
