Mercian Labels Group Digital Printer Award Winner 2013

Mercian Labels Group Digital Printer Award Winner 2013

Fantastic news for the team at Mercian Labels last week when we won the coveted “Digital Label Printer of the Year 2013” award!

The highly sought after Digital Printer Awards were hostly contested as usual, with the presentation made by John Parrot MBE at a packed celebration ceremony at the Mariott hotel at Grosvenor Square, London.

Our winning entry, for one of our long standing customers hit the award criteria precisely:

Overall, the judges are looking for quality, creativity and innovation. Please make sure any supporting information is concise and to the point, outlining the benefits and equipment/materials used in production or the production process.  The judges will look at three main criteria:

  1. Technical print and finishing quality
  2. The benefits of using digital printing to both print supplier and end customer
  3. Innovation, we are looking for examples that encompass all the singular benefits of digital – short run, variable data and creativity

For the Labels category, the judges were looking for “Digitally printed labels that delivered significant benefits to the customer compared to traditional production methods.”

Winner of Label Category at the Digital Printer Awards 2013

Winner of Label Category at the Digital Printer Awards 2013 – Wessex Mill labels from Mercian Labels

Our winning entry was “Wessex Mill” labels for Clarks (Wantage) Ltd.

Clarks (Wantage) Ltd have been a customer of Mercian Labels for over a decade, buying a large and increasing range of designs of shelf edge labels for their premium flour products from us manufactured using conventional flexo’. Their business involves milling speciality flours for craft home bakers.

However, as their market has evolved, they wanted to experiment with more varieties of flour, with lots more SKU colour varieties and in different short run quantities whilst cutting down costs. By late 2012 their profile of work was ripe for moving to digital. Significant technical challenges around colour matching digital print to existing flexo printed labels were overcome.

The benefits of moving from flexo to digital for the customer were significant and demonstrated in their testimonial (below). They have been able to grow their business by expanding their product range significantly, cutting out all plate costs, increasing the number of innovative colours used in their designs to increase shelf edge appeal, seen a significant increase in quality and also a reduction in lead times.

All of this has been done using standard label stock, and using clean but clever designs and the full range of benefits including the excellent 1200dpi print quality of digital to provide maximum value to the customer.

Our client commented  “Having moved over to digital labels after 10+ years of flexo labels, not only did Mercian Labels make the move smooth and easy to happen, the quality and finish of the labels has certainly increased. We stick these labels on bags of flour to go out of shop shelves and since moving over the colour has got brighter and the printing a lot clearer too.  We use thousands of label on a daily basis. The main benefit of the digital labels is that anything that needs to be changed can be done almost instantly rather than waiting for a new printing block to be made, This is extremely handy for us, also it cuts down the costs. We try to place orders of 20,000 labels plus and where the flexo labels needed a 3 week lead time the digital one seem to be ready almost instantly.

Such a prestigious accolade is testament to the hard working team at Mercian Labels – thanks and congratulations to you all!
